That's a good idea Gill and I agree with that. If you shared freebies like free Wordpress themes, ebooks, articles or software, it's better to store the files on file hosting servers like Ziddu or Rapidshare and let your visitors download the files there. The file hosting companies will even pay you for every unique download your visitors do.

Do videos use a lot of resources?  Mostly people have been asking about flash - but videos seem like they might.  Or is that something that would be good hosted elsewhere like Youtube, and you just have a link on your site?

Flash is client side processing which means that the only thing the server is doing is sending the file to the client for them to "run" on their end. This doesn't cause a load on the server beyond downloading any other file and it's fine.

I'd recommend hosting larger flash videos elsewhere though to save bandwidth and for the ease of embedding as if you allow embedding of your self-hosted videos, others will eat up your bandwidth whereas if they're on YouTube for instance, your bandwidth won't be used.
