Backing up a virtual server
« on: March 02, 2010, 12:33:04 PM »
How is data backed up on a virtual server and how often does it take place?  My fear is that there is a problem with the physical server and all the data on the virtual server is lost.

Backups are the responsibility of customer just like a dedicated server.

Hello Webguy,  You can easily run backups through cpanel.  I would also highly recommend to download your backups somewhere "offsite" as well. It never hurts to make an extra backup or two, It sure beats not having one when you need it.

So if I have my backup but something happens to the VPS, how long will it take to recreate the VPS so I can reinstall my site?

It depends how you do your backup, reloading the OS in our VPS control panel takes less than 5 minutes.

Restoring a backup from Quick Backup (another function inside our VPS Control Panel) requires admin interaction at this time but we can typically restore a 20GB VPS in less than 30 minutes once we have the backup file.

Our server has an automatic daily, weekly, and monthly backup. We (and certain of our customers) have been *very* thankful for this feature! Am I correct in understanding that your virtual server doesn't have a similar feature?

A virtual server is just like a dedicated server, managed are not included. Depending on how you setup your VPS there are a lot of ways to backup the data. If you use cPanel you can backup to an offsite ftp account which could even be your home computer.

Some of our VPS customers have 1 VPS in dallas and 1 in Texas and they backup from1 location to the other.

A VPS is a server and you are responsible for managing the system unless you pay for us to manage it.

Ah! Now I understand. Thanks for taking the time to explain. We are looking at moving to Virtual Servers at some point, but at the moment, we manage our own. It is good to know I will need to check into that aspect.
