FTP accounts
« on: March 06, 2010, 06:30:18 AM »
In the X1 hosting plan, I notice that we are allowed to create up to 20 FTP accounts. Do you have any idea why a user will need that many FTP accounts, considering that he can create only 10 sub domains and 2 addon domains?

Hi Sunwalker,  The reason these packages have so many ftp accounts available is sometimes larger websites require more accounts for various things such as multiple people working on the content (photos, videos, etc).    Having multiple accounts can also make it easier to see who has been doing what and restricting access to particular folders such as user directories on a website (i.e. http://some.domain.com/~USERNAME)

I hope this helps.

Restricting access is definitely a good reason to have multiple FTP accounts as you don't want to give a novice who's task is to simply upload images to the photo gallery access to your core files which might accidentally be deleted in the process. Security is another issue as if that user has some sort of trojan, that FTP account might be compromised and if it was the main one, you'd be in trouble.

That makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. So we would need multiple FTP accounts especially if we manage a website of a specific type (like wiki, article directory, image or file hosting) which allows users to contribute content or upload files. Is that correct?
