No Management?
« on: January 14, 2010, 06:38:10 PM »
If you were to purchase VPS with the No cPanel option then what exactly do you not have control over? What limitations will this give you?

It doesn't give you limitations it simply means that we do not offer managed services on it. You can use the VPS as you wish with root access. You can even load other control panels. We have decided that it was not economical to offer managed services on configurations other than cpanel so we have standardize our services around it.

What other control panel do I have to download for it, and where do I get it? Is it free or do I have to pay for it?

There are lots of control panels, we sell a license for cPanel the industry leader but you can install anything on your vps.

Here are some free control panels:
http://www.isp-control.net
http://www.ispconfig.org
http://www.webmin.com

We are also working on a licensing agreement with Interworx that should be available shortly.

Wouldn't it make more sense to purchase the product that has a cPanel included?  Why bother downloading some 3rd party program when one is readily available?

I dont understand why anyone would use anything other than cPanel either but it is nice to give our customers options. Some people order a vps package with less than 512MB ram and in that case I would not suggest cPanel. Other times people are only hosting 1 site and they are comfortable with the linux command line so they dont need cPanel.

But honestly it just makes your life easier with nightly updates, a good backup system that lets you ftp your nightly / weekly / monthly backups to another location (home?).

Some people just like to play around with different control panels and a VPS is a great place for that since you can reload your VPS in the control panel without having to put in a ticket.

Thank you for the awesome information. I am one of those people who are new to VPS and just wanting to play around with it all a bit before I try to actually host a public site on it.

Especially when using VPS and you practically do most things yourself,  I think it will give you less headache to use cPanel than to try other control panels which you are not familiar to.

I think the reason why some people would like to try other types of control panel so that they will have a knowledge about those as well. This is what I will do if I were to choose my own control panel. You can't really appreciate what cPanel has unless you know the differences when you compare it to other control panels.

So basically you're going through an educational process when you play around with other cPanels instead of just sticking with one.  That's makes sense.

While cPanel is definitely one of the most user-friendly panels out there, you can manage without it if you know what you're doing and also save money in the process. I've used HyperVM in the past and was satisfied with it as while it was as friendly as cPanel, it still had a decent GUI and got the job done at the end of the day.
